A Bridge over Troubled Waters

A Bridge over Troubled Waters

A Bridge over Troubled Waters

When you’re weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all

I’m on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can’t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

The Violent side of Blue

The Violent side of Blue

The Violent side of Blue

Sometimes, sunsets don’t happen like you expect them to. This was one of those times. Usually, after the sun goes down, the sky shows off it’s dusky hues which really make for an interesting scene. On this day however, overcast conditions made blue and green the only colors I could see. Blue psychologically is associated with peace and calm, but I can’t see that here. All I see is aggression, drama and sheer violence in the clouds, hence the title, the violent side of blue.

Shot Details:

Camera: Canon 7D
ISO : 160
Aperture: f/22
Shutter Speed: 3 exposures with base exposure at 15s, exif shows overexposed shutter speed of 30s.

Tonemapped in Photomatix, refined in CS5.

I was really awestruck by the thin line of clouds just above the horizon; I’m not sure what they’re called. The tidepools were being flooded by the high-ish tide and there weren’t any major clouds in the sky whose reflections I could catch. I set up shop near the very edge of the tidepools and waited for the precise moment when the sun was between the cloud line and the horizon before pressing the shutter. 🙂

Shot Details:

Camera: Canon 7D

Aperture: f/22
Shutter Speed: 1/4s

Used a 3 Stop hard edge GND filter to even out the exposure. Processed in Lightroom 4 and CS5

Fire In The Sky

For nearly a week and a half, sunsets were all washed away by overcast skies and rain. Out of the blue, we had this amazing sunset at long last. I had to desaturate the sky to get this, that’s how awesome it was! Happy Easter Everyone! 🙂

Camping in Outer Space

Camping in Outer Space

This is my first official attempt at capturing star trails. While camping at Julian, CA, I planted my tripod outside our tent and took a few test shots. I also made sure to point the camera towards the north, so that the star trails would be cicular. Once I got an idea of the correct exposure, I set the remote timer to take 26 shots with each shot exposed for 3.5 minutes. My friend and I light painted the first shot alone to illuminate the tent and the nearby foliage. The temperatures outside were subzero and after two hours, it was done.

Shot Details :

Camera: Canon 7D
ISO : 800
Aperture : 5.6

26 shots each at 3.5 minutes stacked using CS5 . First frame was light painted.

The Salk institute in San Diego has some mind blowing architecture. The institute is housed in a complex designed by the firm of Louis Kahn. Michael Duff of the Kahn firm was the supervising architect and a major design influence on the structure that consists of two symmetric buildings with a stream of water flowing in the middle of a courtyard that separates the two.The institute is closed on weekends, but I didn’t know that 😉 The security guard was kind enough to let me take a shot during sunset. In the end, this is the shot I got. I’ll probably go back here soon. The place has a very ethereal feel to it.
